Ryokan and onsen

In a bath-led property the towel is used soaked, wrung and used again before it is ever dry.

A ryokan or onsen facility uses towels in a sequence that a Western hotel does not: wet at the washing station, carried to the bath, then used again on the way out. A towel that performs acceptably dry can fail entirely in that second wet use.

The consequence for specification is that absorbency alone is the wrong metric. What matters is how the web behaves after it has been saturated and wrung — whether the surface still has structure or has collapsed into a film.

Common mistakes

  • Approving a sample dry, then discovering it shreds when wrung
  • Treating one size as universal across the room and the bath

Send us the specification you are working to.

A target weight, a pack format, a market and an annual volume is enough to start. A sample of what you use today is better.
